4th of July Chocolate Covered Oreos

Sharing is caring!

I was looking for a fun little treat to make for the 4th of July when I came across this post for chocolate covered Oreos. They’re so cute! I figured I could give them a try in red, white and blue.

I was a little nervous to make the chocolate covered Oreos, but it was actually easier than cake pops. I’ve made cake pops before, but they didn’t turn out very good. I have a friend that makes awesome cake pops. She makes it look so easy!

To make the chocolate covered Oreos I went to the craft store and bought red, white and blue melting chocolates. I also bought Candy Melts EZ Thin. It helps to thin out the chocolate which makes it easier to work with. This is what it looks like:

I also bought lollipop sticks. You want to make sure they are not too thick because you are putting them into the filling of the Oreo.

From the grocery store I bought Double Stuf Oreos and sprinkles. I found that the sprinkles were cheaper at the grocery store vs. the craft store. Don’t get me wrong, the craft store ones are super cute! But I liked the ones at the grocery store too.

The first step to make the chocolate covered Oreos was to insert the sticks into the filling. I firmly held the cookies together while inserting the stick so that it didn’t separate. Make sure you use Double Stuff Oreos.

Once my Oreos had the sticks in them it was time to start melting the chocolate. I followed the directions on the bag, working with one color at a time. Once the chocolate was melted I added the EZ Thin and gave it a good stir. You’ll want to work fast so your chocolate doesn’t harden.

I lined a cookie sheet with parchment paper, then I was ready to work. I tilted my cup of chocolate and dipped the Oreo in, then turned the Oreo around, making sure to cover the whole thing with chocolate. I pulled the Oreo out and let any extra chocolate drip off.

Then I set the chocolate covered Oreo on the parchment paper. If you are decorating with sprinkles you will want to add those at this time, before the chocolate melts.

Here’s the most difficult step….you have to wait until the chocolate hardens. Luckily it doesn’t take too  long. Then you can gobble them up!

Overall I thought this was much easier than making cake pops. It still makes a heck of a mess, but it was totally worth it! I thought they turned out really cute.
